A Donation to a Very Worthwhile Show

Stephanie Blaylock is well known in the model horse community. A long time hobbyist, her artistic skills are incredible. She is also a good-hearted person who cares about others, with one of her "dear to the heart" causes being Girls Scouts.

Long story short, Stephanie volunteers with The Circle C Equestrian Center, a barn owned and operated by the Girl Scouts and which provides equestrian learning opportunities for girls and young women, particularly those without the means to afford equine activities.

As part of that support, she holds a live show, The Circle C Classic Model Horse Show. Recently Stephanie contacted me and asked about buying some haversacks to use as awards for her division champs.

That's Stephanie's, horse, Shrimp. Isn't he beautiful? Those eyes!

I was a Girl Scout, my daughters were Girl Scouts, several of my granddaughters are Girl Scouts, and I was also an adult volunteer. Needless to say, the more I learned about Stephanie's show, the happier I was to support it!

I began looking for fabric, hoping to find something connected to Girl Scouts but, with a print that was small - these pouches were to be used for a Mini show and so I was making Stablemate sized ones.

I found the perfect fabric, but would the scale of the print be right? I crossed my fingers and ordered a couple of yards.

It was!  As soon as that was confirmed, I started cutting and stitching.

I'd ordered some extra fabric - since Girls Scouts are dear to my own heart, I wanted to donate more than just the championship pouches.

The scale of the print also worked well for a show apron.

Which looks a little odd over an 18th century petticoat, but that's okay. Hah!

Interested in sending Stephanie a donation? The link to the show's Facebook page can be found here. Or, I can help you get in touch with her, too.

Best of luck with the show, Stephanie! And please count on me again for next year's show - this Girl Scout would love to continue supporting your cause.

Dad's Slides: Girl Scout Horse Camp

Before I had a horse of my own, I took advantage of every opportunity that came my way to be around them. Girl Scout Camp at Sycamore Valley in 1967 was one of those opportunities.
Sycamore Valley was beautiful and situated on the Wildcat, a tributary of the Wabash.
I was ten and went with my best friend, Bobbie Sue. (She was the one I used to hold backyard model horse shows with.)
Bobbie with LBJ, the camp's resident burro. (LBJ was the nickname for Lyndon B. Johnson, the President. Someone was not a fan of him when they named that donkey!)
I reveled in having access to so many horses while at camp.
This girl reminds me of Irish Flame. And that saddle sore on her back looks like it was painful.
Look at the color on the horse behind her - oh, how I wish a photo of it by itself were in the slides that my father took!

Bobbie Sue and I went to Girl Scout camp together several times, but eventually we both dropped out of Girl Scouts when we started Junior High.

We continued going to horse camp together, though. More tomorrow!
