A Hobby Surprise

Yesterday I received Equine Collectibles, Lesli Kathman's excellent publication for model horse enthusiasts. I'd been at a conference for teachers all day, so I quickly hustled through my "getting home from work" routine and sat down to enjoy.

This page caught my eye:

Yes, it's a gorgeous horse, but it was the quote that drew me eye.

A quote from Dieter Uchtdorf? In a hobby magazine??

Elder Uchtdorf is an apostle, a leading official in my church, and I was watching live via internet streaming when he gave the talk that included that quote in 2008. Like me, he is a Mormon.

The author of the article in Equine Collectibles, though, is not. There are several Mormon hobbyists (including some well known ones such as Kathleen Moody, Cristine Holt, and Tara Oliver), and we have had our own hobby groups for years on Facebook as well as in the early internet days as a Yahoo Group. We share not only a love of all things equine, but of the gospel, too.

I am not sure where the author got the quote from - it's pretty obscure unless you are a Mormon. I even did some online searches for quotes on creativity and didn't find it.

Regardless of where she found it, it is a beautiful quote, and I love how it fits in so well with one of my fondest joys - model horses.

As a fun aside, years ago Kathleen surprised us all by deciding to do a sculpt of a Moyles horse, Rockwell, which is associated with Mormonism and has an interesting, albeit sad, story behind it. Kathleen gifted us each with one. Here's mine:
