My Beowulf arrived yesterday and it turns out that I did indeed order him.
I haven't opened him yet, but I will soon and share him in an upcoming post.
That wolf on his box got me thinking about the wildlife we have here in Indiana, especially that which is close to my home. I thought it might be fun to take a look at some of it.
We no longer have wolves, but we do have lots of coyotes.
Lisa made this recording of coyotes in the field behind her home last May.
Then there's Nash. A coyote wanna be. (And maybe a little wild himself - ever watched him play?)
His howling is triggered by the sirens of ambulances and other emergency vehicles. I only caught the tail end of his howling in this video (I had Tammo on the leash and I scrambled to get my phone out of my pocket and the camera going) but there's enough to make you smile. Such a goofy boy!
Then, there are giant puffballs. I rolled up to the gate to Leslie's farm Thursday morning and spied this beauty when I got out to open the gate.
Looks like a round loaf of bread sitting in the grass, doesn't it?
They grow so fast, their skin sometimes cracks.
Here's my foot (and my favorite horsey shoes) to give you some perspective as to just how big it was. Pretty amazing, right?
Puffballs are edible, although I have never tried one. There are lots of recipes online including this one for fried puffballs.
Going from giant to tiny, look what I found on my patio yesterday!
Some teeny tiny baby snails scattered behind a patio chair.
We've found them before both on our patio and our front porch, but I have never seen an adult snail in the yard or flowers. I have found their shiny trails, though, so I knew they were around.
Another find - this lovely feather lying in the grass. It's a big feather, and I am pretty sure it is from one of the red shouldered hawks who live in our neighborhood.
Aren't they beautiful birds? (Photo from Google Images.) We also have bald eagles, osprey, great egrets, and great blue herons that frequent our neighborhood skies and lake.
Finally, a very special item from "the wilds" of Indiana. This apple.
I cried when it was given to me at the Feast Sewing Circle Thursday evening. I'll share that story tomorrow.
