A Blank Slate

As the New Year rolls in, it feels like I have a blank slate in front of me. I've wrapped up the year with a review series, Christmas is over and written about, and as winter settles in and life quiets down, the feeling as I sit down to write is, "Now what?"

I do have a list of things that have yet to be shared, but some of it seems quite mundane, while others are just a kernel of an idea and not focused enough to share at this time.

I mentioned that we were graining the horses, but a photo of grain bags lined up in the barn is a bit boring. Maybe if I had photos of the horses cantering up to eat, or lined up in a row as they munch that grain, but this is all I have.

The skull of a horse, a recent addition to Tim's eclectic collection of antlers and animal bones, startled me the first time I came across it in the barn. It is sort of interesting, but I know nothing about it or its history. I can't write much more than that.

I have been quietly doing some sewing but haven't said much about it. Should I write about that?

I altered a friend's mother of the groom dress for her and here's the picture that showed me that it turned out and that she was happy with it. But that's not a blog post, especially for a blog whose focus is supposed to be on my horsey life.

Unicorns are sort of horsey, though, and even though I really dislike them, maybe I should write about this little guy? (Whose eyes are hidden under all that fluff.)

Mila asked me to repair the hole in its back and I got that done and returned it to her.

How about this video that made me both laugh and cry?

Molly, the mouse that roared! Rehomed with us in 2017 from a puppy mill where she was a breeder for 4 years, Molly is timid and shy. The rare times we have heard her voice, it has only been a soft, single woof.

Craig was working outside and had Nash with him. She could hear Craig out there but did not know who it was so she stepped into the role that Nash usually fills and barked to defend the home! What a surprise to us all! And good girl, Mama!

(Pepper is not barking because she was trained by The Seeing Eye to not bark. She's been retired from being a guide dog for several years and still does not break that training aside from a little woof to remind us she wants her dinner. Which is usually an hour before we plan to feed her!)

Speaking of guide dogs reminds me that I got a cool Christmas gift from my dear friend Kathy who is blind. Almost always her gifts are made by a former student of hers and are tactile as well. (That allows her to see the gift, too.)

This neat wood-burned plaque that I plan to hang in my office or sewing room! (I love the blaze on the horse's face and that you can even tell what breed the horse is.)

But again, that isn't enough for an entire blog post, it's just a kernel. By the way, Kathy was instrumental in helping us rescue Molly; go here for a bit of that story and to see Kathy receive an award from Dolly Parton, too!

Blank slate indeed. It seems that in telling you I had nothing to write about, I did share some things that might be of interest, things that I might not have shared otherwise.

And that's okay. I've got some Breyer boxes to open today along with a trip to the barn, so tomorrow I should have a more focused and horsey post.

Stay 'tooned!
