Derby Day has really snuck up on me this year. I did get my Derby glasses out (one for each of my kids' birth years), but that's it.
Including Tiztastic, the horse I am rooting for.
He's probably not a contender for the roses, but I am still hopeful. And how can I not root for him when there is a very distant but real pedigree connection to him through my Quarter Horse, Cee Hunt? It's not a direct line, but if you trace back through the Tizzy line, you come to Cee's Tizzy, the King Ranch, and Leo who was my Cee's grandsire.
That's enough for me to be pulling for Tiztastic today!
He is at the 14th post position and his jockey is wearing maroon silks. The original field was of twenty horses, but two have scratched. (Grande and Rodriguez due to foot bruises according to one source, another said cracked heels.)
The track is also going to be very muddy and that will certainly play a role in who wins. I don't like muddy tracks for racing - I don't want to see a horse slip and fall or injure themselves due to the slick track. The jockeys, too, are at greater risk when the track is sloppy.
Oh wow! That is so cool !! Every horse is a descendant?? How often does that happen in a horse race??This is why I always buy the DRF!! They usually have a Section showing each performer's pedigree and I like to read through it to see if any of the current horses are related to the horses of yester year!! Thanks Lynn for this bit of trivia!! I'll have to check out the section again more carefully!
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for Rodriguez or Journalism to win - but if they're associated with Bob Baffert, then I'm leery after his reputation in the sport! May the best horse win!! And may they all be safe in these weather conditions!!
The Derby snuck up on me too. That's what happens when one has no TV but a multitude of distractions nonetheless. Thank you for this lovely reminder. Yes, cupcakes would be just fine!

ReplyDeleteWith very successful descendant sires like A.P. Indy, Gone West, Into Mischief, & Storm Cat it's no surprise to me every horse in this year's race can be traced back! Rodriguez was one of my picks (Don't care much for Baffert but I liked the East Coast route) but he's out with the bruised foot so I'm back down to Coal Battle. (Grande was a vet scratch due to a cracked heel; Mike Repole's horses just can't get a break when it comes to the Derby!) It would be neat to see a son of American Pharoah win too but as long as they all come back safe, please!
