Cutting Hay!

We are putting up hay! Well, actually, Tim and others are putting up hay while I just stay at home looking at the photos that they take and send me.

The hay field being cut belongs to my sister and is new for us to use this year. Since Leslie and her husband Rick no longer have horses pastured on it, they asked if we wanted to use it for hay. 

 We are getting a really good mix of orchard grass and clover in this cutting.

The hay will dry in the field a few days and then will be baled. Tim is splitting the hay with the cutter/baler, and will leave this first cutting there and pick it up after the second cutting. (My sister lives north of us outside of Brookston.)

And as usual, Tim's sense of humor is right there at the fore!

So, we have the first hay field cut and drying.  I would imagine that Tim will be cutting the hay field at the barn very soon. 

It's hard to think about winter when it's only the middle of June, but last year there was a hay shortage and we ended up having to buy some to tide us through the winter. Adding Leslie's pasture to what we already have should keep us in hay all winter.
