Gladys Seese - Artist

Last night a photo of a painting came across my Facebook feed that made me start with surprise. I knew that painting!

In fact, I have the photo from which it was taken.

It's a photo of my penpal Sue's mare Stormy and the foal she had in the late 1970s. The artist of the painting is Sue's mother, Glady Seese.

Gladys is in her 90s now and thriving. She lives independently in her own home in Oregon and still paints. She used to paint quite a few horses and I was lucky that she did three for me.

All were gifts, and the first one I received was this one of my Quarter Horse, Cee Hunt.

Sue and I were constantly sending each other photos of our horses and I'd sent her this one of Cee. What a surprise when I got a large package in the mail and found that painting. That was when I discovered that Sue's mother was an artist.

Several years later I was gifted with a head study of my beloved Amy, Abby's predecessor.

And a year or so after that, one arrived of me, barefoot and bareback on Amy. (That was back in the days when I could hop up from the ground and mount without saddle or mounting block. Those days are long gone!)

Gladys is still painting (this portrait of a dog is very recent) but she has said she is going to focus more on her quilting.

I can only hope that, when I am 95 I am as vibrant and living life to its fullest like Gladys.
